One of the biggest problems on the takeaway is that most players roll their
wrists immediately upon taking the club back. The PROBLEM is that the club
face stays open and, therefore, will not come back to the ball squarely.
The takeaway is a one piece motion: Your shoulders and hips coil around your
spine angle, away from the target, all at the same time. There must be a transfer
of weight into a braced right knee, which means that the right knee stays
in its original position. The shoulders take the club back until your hands
are just over the back knee, with the shaft now parallel to the ground, the
butt of the club facing the target.
Your thumbs, in this position, should be pointing up; the back of your left
hand facing in the direction of your chest. You should not be able to see
the face of your watch!
STOP HERE!!REPEAT THIS MOTION.
Do not attempt to raise the club with your hands. You must continue the movement
of both your shoulders until one shoulder is pointing at or behind the ball
and the other is behind your neck. At the risk of being repetitious, do this
drill using a mirror,one step at a time. From here you coil your shoulders
so that your left shoulder points at the ball and your right shoulder is behind
your neck. Your shoulders move together in one piece. Your back is now facing
the target or should be.
STOP in this position. Feel the weight on the inside of your right knee!!
You may feel some tension; so take a deep breath, still in this coiled position,
and let it out. You should feel all the tension release from your body. Now
is when you want to start the down swing.
The DOWNSWING must not start before you finish the backswing. If you coiled
properly; your back is to the target, and your head is behind the ball, with
most of your weight on the back foot, you have completed the backswing and
are ready for the downswing. Practice this in a mirror! "SLOWLY"! Rome was
not built in a day! Remember that golf is a game of feel. You don't "make"
things happen, you "feel" them happen.
Do not break your wrists. At some point in the backswing, you will "feel"
them break. At the start of the downswing, your right elbow comes back into
the rightside of your rib cage. This will cause your hips to start moving
out of the way. During this move, remmeber to maintain the wrist cock. Bring
your hands and arms back to the take away position where your shaft was parallel
to the ground and the butt end of the shaft faces the target. This where the
power comes in. This is where your wrists begin to uncock! Do not uncock your
wrists; it will happen automatically.
Most important is that you KEEP YOUR HEAD BEHIND THE BALL! It is the most
difficult thing you will have to do plus it applies to evey club in the bag.
Make an effort to hit the ball with your back shoulder. Your chest at this
point has traded places with your back, in that your chest faces the target.
An excellent drill for this is to use a hittng mat with a rubber tee. After
all, if you can't hit the rubber tee, how can you expect to hit the ball?
